Hi friends! Today I want to share with you how we made our DIY tall wingback upholstered headboard for our bedroom and why you should try this too!
When we moved into our rental more than two years ago I wanted to make the house feel cozy! So one of the first projects I wanted to tackle was a tall wingback upholstered headboard for our bedroom. I knew it was an easy DIY and it was going to improve the feeling and looks of our bedroom so much.
And I was right!
A headboard is one of those things that are not totally necessary, but are very impactful. And if you want your bedroom to feel like an embrace, than you need a headboard. I prefer an upholstered one for the warmth and comfy feeling it gives.
Inspiration
Of course the easier way to do it is to buy one! But maybe this happens to you too: the things I like, are probably more expensive than what I would like to spend. So the solution to this is to try to make something similar on a smaller budget.
Here’s a tall upholstered headboard from Pottery Barn that inspired me to make my own:
Hmmm…. this king size headboard costs around $1600. Although I would love to have this one, this time we have to DIY one that would give us the same look for less.
Here’s my easy DIY Pottery Barn tall wingback inspired headboard tutorial
1.Materials you need
- 1 sheet of 4’x8′ OSB or plywood
- optional: 2 extra pieces of 9″ x 56″ plywood if you want to make the wings chunkier
- 1″x4″ pine lumber (we used 2″x4″ because we had some left over from other projects)
- 1″ foam padding (I bought mine at Joann ) or use a XL twin mattress pad as Angela used in her project.
- upholstery adhesive
- 5 yards batting (here’s a good option from Amazon)
- 5 yards fabric (I used this one from Amazon)
- staple gun and staples

3.Build the headboard and wings
First step was building a structure out of 2×4 lumber and attach the plywood to the structure.
Then build the wings. If you want your wings to look chunkier double the OSB or plywood. This step is not necessary but I think it makes the headboard look more high end.
Do not attach the wings to the headboard yet.
4.START UPHOLSTERING
Next we used upholstery adhesive to glue the 1″ foam to headboard. You need to cut the foam slightly bigger than the headboard in order to be able to wrap it around the corners.
Next step is to cover the headboard with the batting. This needs to be pretty tight. My tip is to staple one side and then staple the opposite side so you can stretch it out and make sure it’s straight.
After the batting is on and nicely stapled, it’s time to start stapling on the fabric. Make sure the fabric is straight. This is very important if your fabric has some kind of pattern. You also want to stretch the fabric equally on all sides so the headboard doesn’t have any creases.
After finishing the headboard, you need to do the same process with the wings. The only thing we did differently was attaching all the layers on the inside part of the wing, then attach the wing with screws to the headboard and finally wrapping the outer side of the wing with the layers. We did this in order to hide the screws we used to attach the wings t the headboard. Hope it makes sense.
Another tricky part is making the corners look good. I’m far from an expert, so you might need to research this part a little bit more. I made sure to fold the fabric at the corners the same way on all sides, so at least it looks uniform.
5.TIPS WE LEARNED AFTER OUR FIRST DIY UPHOLSTERED HEADBOARD PROJECT:
- Make sure you have enough supplies for the entire project
- You work better on a large table or on saw horses
- Don’t forget you have to wrap the wings on all sides, so measure correctly
- I don’t recommend starting with a patterned fabric unless you feel very confident in your skills
- The headboard is heavy so you might need a little help to move the headboard around
This might sound more complicated than it really is. But I assure you it is easy and it is worth the try to DIY your own wingback upholstered headboard.
Your bedroom is going to feel so cozy and welcoming! Believe me, my kids love to cuddle up in our bed all the time!
