It is hard to believe that a trend we like so much one year can become not trendy in just a few years. One of this trends that is going out of style is shiplap as we have known for the last 10 years. But I’m here to show you how designers are using shiplap in a fresh way so you can take some ideas and implement them in your own home.
what is shiplap?
Shiplap is a type of board that has overlapping joints. The boards are usually made of wood, plywood or MDF (medium-density fiberboard).
There are technical details that I won’t go into, but I know you can achieve a similar look using different planking methods like nickel gap or tongue and groove.
If you want the look of shiplap but not the structural strength of wood there are wall panels that are more affordable and an easy DIY, and even shiplap wallpaper! We used a shiplap panel in our first flip bathroom renovation and I think it added some personality to this small space.
my opinion about shiplap and other trends
Personally, I don’t think that shiplap is ever going to go 100% out of style. In fact, that is my opinion about most of the trends. Let me explain why.
We live in a globalized world where we can basically get the materials for any style we want. We are not stuck in an era anymore. Our local home improvement store is not our only option. Besides, there are hundreds of places to source for materials to obtain a certain style or an eclectic personal mix.
Even though trends still exist, you can look back and see if you resonate with one design style more and make your home look like that today. Minimalist, victorian, shabby chic, boho, midcentury modern or any other, there is place for everyone.
You can go all out on one style, or blend two or three together to make it more personal, which I recommend.
That said, if you like shiplap as it was done by Joanna Gaines in the past, keep enjoying it. There is nothing wrong with that.
But if you want to refresh it a little, let’s take a look at how designers are using shiplap today.
Tips for using shiplap in a fresh way
install shiplap vertically
Use shiplap as WAINSCOTING
Use shiplap on ceilings
use it on doors and cabinets
Use shiplap as backsplash or on an island
Well, today I let the amazing images speak for themselves. As you can tell, shiplap is not going anywhere. It is such a versatile material that works in any space of a home.
It is practical and easy to clean while adding texture to surfaces in a subtile way.
Can’t wait to incorporate this material in future projects!
Thank you for joining me on this journey of discovering design trends and tips to incorporate them in our own spaces. I hope you got some useful information and lots of inspiration.
Bye for now!
