With fall approaching fast I felt the need of changing and elevating the feel of my living room. So I’ve been on a wild search for new throw pillows with an affordable price tag. I’ll share what I found with you so you don’t have to spend eight hours of your life researching for the right throw pillows combination 😉
Inspiration
While I wanted to slowly transition from summer to fall decor, I am not ready yet for a full orange-pumpkin look. I want my living room to feel more like a toned down summer so you’ll see the combinations are pretty neutral and could work for multiple seasons really.
I love the colors and textures in the photo above designed by Amber Lewis! Feels so cozy and inviting. Muted green, browns, corals in the pillow and rug, neutrals and of course the curtains and antique coffee table add so much interest to this living room.
The image above is another big design inspiration with a more neural background and pops of dark green, burgundy and rust accessories. These are my favorite colors for fall decor.

tips for mixing patterns and textures
When it comes to mixing patterns things can become a little overwhelming and most of us choose the safe way with two identical decorative pillows on each side of the couch. While this is not wrong, I’m going to share a few quick tips that are going to help you get to the next level by mixing interesting patterns and textures like a designer.
use the 60-30-10 rule
This is a simple rule that suggest that 60 percent of your room should have a dominant color, 30 percent a secondary color and 10 percent an accent color.
use different scales in patterns
Combine a large pattern with a small pattern and a solid color like on Option 1. This will give interest but help patterns enhance each other instead of competing.
When using neutrals go heavy on texture
If you like neutrals and you want a calm look, or if you have other bold patterns in the room, I suggest looking for fabrics with lots of different textures like Option 3. Use linen, boucle, waffle texture cotton, or my favorite, velvet. When put together this fabrics enhance each other by reflecting light in different ways and interest to the touch.
repeat colors
An easy way to get a cohesive look is to repeat colors at least three times in the same room. For example in Option 2 the rust color in the small pattern is repeated in the solid rust color in the second pillow and I would suggest to find another way to incorporate that color in the space. Like a throw blanket, the curtains, a vase, in the rug, o even a candle.
combine prints
This one is a little bit more complicated but my go-to is combining florals with stripes. They work great together. If you want to know more about mixing patterns and prints leave me a comment and I will gladly go more in depth on this subject.
Thanks for spending time reading this and hope you got inspired to try something new this season!
